I have worked my way into management over the years. While I love the ability to try many of the things I always thought would work as a supervisor, I get much less joy from my work than when I am working with the patients. I love the interaction with therapists, the problem solving, the work to make the patients better through the efforts of the staff but find the “numbers crunching” to be unfulfilling. I have often thought it would be wonderful if each therapist could “take a turn” at the management position, kind of like the rotations done in hospitals where the therapists take turns working the Orthopedic floor. If the treating therapist could work in management just a few months, it would make them a better clinician and team member. If the managers worked as treating therapists, they would be better managers. It is easy to get burned-out in either role. Perhaps taking a turn at the management spot would be just enough break to revive a passion for the patients. If a manager works in the field, he/she may change the communication style upon return to the supervisory role. I may suggest this in the next year…perhaps a period of management shadowing. This would provide an opportunity to see who has the affinity for the supervisory role and provide a stronger connection with the field and office.
