wet diaper detector –

We are getting closer!  I still think there should be an indicator on incontinence products that detects infection.  This key chain device on Kickstarter lets you know if a diaper is wet or dry.  Just touch it to the outside of the clothes!  Amazing

Non Profit Healthcare

My experience has been that Non Profit based healthcare is often misunderstood. Every business has a goal to meet a budget and to have enough profit (or whatever other name you wish to give it) to grow or better the business.  A privately owned business owner seeks to increase the value of the business and improve his/her personal “salary”.  Large companies that are nonprofits in the healthcare world can lose the concept of efficiency  or best business practices for the sake of profit but I am sure that those at the top never lose this idea.  An effective manager within a nonprofit must think like a business owner to help optimize the resources.

Recently I heard a person say “We don’t make the decisions in that way because we are a nonprofit” but nearly in the next breath she said “The salaries of the therapists are lower because we are the only game in town.”  These two decisions are incongruous.  The salaries are lower as a result of a profit motive decision.  A nonprofit could pay more attention to the factors that could increase revenue and use the profits to increase the salaries of the professionals to draw in the best talent.  In my mind this should be the aim of a nonprofit competitor.

I have always worked for “for-profit” organizations and businesses.  I have seen the greatest company successes when the salaries and benefits are competitive.  The desirable employees are drawn to these businesses and the companies benefits from their strengths.  The knowledge they bring, their strong ethical standards, and their passion provide for the patients and physicians and that makes the bottom line grow.

Incontinence products, Urinary tract infections, UTI

I think there should be an incontinence pad or pull-up that is made to detect urinary tract infections.  It could change color in the presence of urine that shows infection.  If they can make a stick that tells you that you are pregnant, they should be able to invent this!

This is why Fannersize would work

I had a dream a long time ago about a room you could stand in three times a week that would make you lose weight and get in shape.  I awoke when I finally went to see what the new “weight loss” craze was all about.  I went into a big building and people were just standing around.  A man came in and said “you can move around if you want.  I’ll be back in 30 minutes.  When he left, a wall rolled up and a HUGE fan came on.  I woke up laughing because wind resistance would really work!  People would rather do something that is re-active instead of Proactive.  This would truly be a great form of exercise.  There could be elderly low wind exercise to help with balance and core stabilization.  Sports teams could work drills in the wind.  Singles could “bump into each other” in “Singles” wind class.  This youtube link reminds me again why this would work.

app, Ford Mustang, Physical Therapy treatment

I love the challenge of making physical therapy sessions feel less like “treatment”. I have a patient who has difficulty with standing endurance and breathing correctly. He needs activity to gradually increase and it feels much more difficult if he is acutely aware of the timer running while working on the standing.

His eyes light up when he talks about cars. I found Ford’s new app that allows you to choose between various options for the hood, spoilers, roof designs…etc. as you build your own 2014 Mustang. I had him work his postural muscle endurance as I helped him select the different options for his Mustang on the app. He became lost in the designing and forgot the growing fatigue in his muscles.
