There are opportunities in home care to make big differences in peoples’ lives with small acts. Today I saw a patient that was anxious because the sound on his television had stopped working. Anxiety has an effect on health and I saw this as something I needed to address.

The use of DVRs, sound bars, and satellite receivers has complicated television reception and it is not uncommon for these types of things to happen. When calling a cable / satellite provider, it inevitably requires trying some things with the equipment that our patients can’t do. They usually can’t get down behind the equipment. They can’t see to handle the bundle of cords that fall behind the set.   If they have to have a technician visit, it costs money that they may not be able to afford.

I was able to trouble-shoot through the situation while he watched with trepidation that I might “make it worse”. In the end, I was able to get the sound back on and it was wonderful to see the relief on his face.   Crisis averted! Solving his problem made my patient more comfortable addressing the exercises and tasks on my agenda for the day.

I love to find new sites.  There is a crowd sourcing site for medical related services and inventions.  It is called medstartr.com.

Please take a look at this invention.  It will communicate with a Smart Phone and inform the physician that the patient is developing significant swelling in the lower extremities.  This is an important sign of Congestive Heart Failure and can lead to earlier treatment and reduced need of more emergent care.

This gentleman should give inspiration to all of us – young and old.  We need to keep moving and to challenge ourselves in a way that works the mind and body together.  Too often we go to a treadmill or other device where we lose the mind’s need for challenge in the activity.  Please watch.

When I was growing up things were much different for everyone in business.  It is popular to talk about the major “advances” for women in the working world but I recognize that this degree of change has been across the scale and has little to do with what we all tend to define as progress.  I had a perception for many years that successful employment was defined as working for one company your entire career and retiring from that company with a retirement package.  I recall watching shows on TV where people joined together in a party to see a person off into their retirement after having worked in that company for 30 to 50 years.  I think I strived for that feeling of appreciation at the end of my career by a group of people that valued what I had given in time and heart for the business.  I believe many of us have been ‘disappointed’ when we changed course, leaving a stable position for another one.  In reality, the times are different for the professional today.  I can look back at the value of every move I made, the new experiences I gained, the information I absorbed, and the wonderful people I had the opportunity to meet with each change.  My advice to the new professional is different now because of that experience.  I would advise that the new professional continue to look to add value to every employer but put your focus on absorbing all you can for your career’s sake.  Market your company but FIRST – Market yourself!  Keeping the belief that you are marketing yourself will keep you honest in your communication, provide a deeper sense of pride in what you are doing and help you to look at the changes you make as new opportunities.  You won’t rely on the appreciation of others in your contribution and won’t be hurt when the employer doesn’t appreciate the level of your contribution should that occur.  

I have been extremely fortunate in my career path but there were times when I couldn’t see that.  Time and history have allowed me to view these changes in a more positive way.  Even when I started doing something that wasn’t particularly appealing at first, I found I grew.  I learned things that helped me in my next move.  I could apply principles I learned from the past to the new situation that made it better.  Every person has a set of skills and beliefs that make them uniquely applicable to a position.  Developing your skills and finding out what you believe in are the first step but feeling confidence to put them to use in a new way is the reward for a lifelong career path.  You might be the only one standing in your “retirement party” but if you have applied yourself in each new “job” with JOY, you will have peace.

We are getting closer!  I still think there should be an indicator on incontinence products that detects infection.  This key chain device on Kickstarter lets you know if a diaper is wet or dry.  Just touch it to the outside of the clothes!  Amazing 

Non Profit Healthcare

My experience has been that Non Profit based healthcare is often misunderstood. Every business has a goal to meet a budget and to have enough profit (or whatever other name you wish to give it) to grow or better the business.  A privately owned business owner seeks to increase the value of the business and improve his/her personal “salary”.  Large companies that are nonprofits in the healthcare world can lose the concept of efficiency  or best business practices for the sake of profit but I am sure that those at the top never lose this idea.  An effective manager within a nonprofit must think like a business owner to help optimize the resources.  

Recently I heard a person say “We don’t make the decisions in that way because we are a nonprofit” but nearly in the next breath she said “The salaries of the therapists are lower because we are the only game in town.”  These two decisions are incongruous.  The salaries are lower as a result of a profit motive decision.  A nonprofit could pay more attention to the factors that could increase revenue and use the profits to increase the salaries of the professionals to draw in the best talent.  In my mind this should be the aim of a nonprofit competitor.  

I have always worked for “for-profit” organizations and businesses.  I have seen the greatest company successes when the salaries and benefits are competitive.  The desirable employees are drawn to these businesses and the companies benefits from their strengths.  The knowledge they bring, their strong ethical standards, and their passion provide for the patients and physicians and that makes the bottom line grow.
