Using a patient’s interest to make treatment more fun

I love the challenge of making physical therapy sessions feel less like “treatment”. I have a patient who has difficulty with standing endurance and breathing correctly. He needs activity to gradually increase and it feels much more difficult if he is acutely aware of the timer running while working on the standing.

His eyes light up when he talks about cars. I found Ford’s new app that allows you to choose between various options for the hood, spoilers, roof designs…etc. as you build your own 2014 Mustang. I had him work his postural muscle endurance as I helped him select the different options for his Mustang on the app. He became lost in the designing and forgot the growing fatigue in his muscles.

An Anatomy App

Pocket Anatomy App for the I-Pad is wonderful to use as a teaching tool.  I can only imagine how wonderful it must be for the student.  When I was a physical therapy student, I was issued a bone box.  There were real bones that we could take home and study.  It was helpful to feel the bone structure while studying the muscle attachments.  The bones have “landmarks” that help the student visualize the tendon attachment through the bone’s response to the tension.  Do the students still have boxes of bones to spread over their apartment floors?  I use the Pocket Anatomy App to show my patients the areas of concern.  I can pull layers off the body to show the depth of the vertebral bodies and the impossibility of “feeling a disc”.  I can show them that the “hard knot” felt  near the neck is really the first rib.

I would like it if Anatomy app had a age choice in the model so I could learn from an app that showed the changes in the body with age.  It would be nice to see the true size of muscles in a not so perfect specimen.  It would be interesting to make a selection of “total hip” and have the app show a view of the body with that change in the model.  I am sure those apps will come.  It is exciting to see the opportunities for student and teacher.
